Fact Finding to Sonbhadra, UP to investigate into the matter of irregularities in the implementation of Forest Rights Act, 2006

Dear Friends,

Many of us have been involved in and working on Forest Rights Act, 2006, status of its implementation and its role in empowering and strengthening the tribal community in India. While the act itself allows for the restoration and recognition of rights of the forest tribes and communities, its implementation has been filled with obstacles and problems, the least of them being the Forest Department itself. In this regard, the incident in Sonbhadra, Village Satdwari, PS Kon on March 16th 2010, reported by our friends in NFFPFW and the media came as a serious shock. Read the rest of this entry »

EU-India FTA to adversely impact agriculture, livelihoods, health

20 April 2010, New Delhi: A beleaguered UPA Government, reeling under pressure from a united opposition on rising food prices, came under further attack from a coalition of groups representing farmers unions, trade unions, hawkers, public health and other civil society organisations on the ongoing, secret negotiations on a European Union–India Free Trade Agreement (EU-India FTA). In a demonstration organised under the banner of ‘Forum Against FTAs’ outside the Commerce Ministry, groups protested against the last round of negotiations between EU and Indian bureaucrats currently underway in Brussels.
